daycare preschoolers active 2-3% of the time

More than one third of US children are now overweight or obese …

About 75% of preschoolers in the US spend most of their days in child care centers, and they’re not moving around for 70% to 83% of their hours there; in fact, they’re only active about 2% to 3% of the time.

    Why?

Dr. Kristen Copeland, a pediatrician at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, and her colleagues have been conducting a series of focus group studies …

In the current study, published in the journal Pediatrics, the team focused on societal factors that could make it difficult to maintain physical activity programs. After conducting nine focus groups with 49 child care providers in Cincinnati, Ohio, the team found three main societal barriers to exercise —

… concerns about the children injuring themselves while at play

… financial constraints that limited some centers’ ability to purchase playground equipment

… and a growing emphasis on academic learning over unstructured physical play time.

    Time

Parents. Take personal responsibility for the PHYSICAL EDUCATION of your children. Schools and Day Cares are NOT getting the job done.

Here’s what preschoolers SHOULD be doing.

    Kids’ obesity rate climbing

    Canada:

In the last 25 years, the obesity rate among children and youth has nearly tripled. As many as 26 per cent of kids between two and 17 years are now overweight or obese. That number jumps to 41 per cent among First Nations children. …

Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology, ParticipACTION, Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario Research Institute, Healthy Active Living and Obesity Research Group (CHEO-HALO) are all supporting some new guidelines:

… urge parents of kids aged one to four to get their kids moving for 180 minutes, or three hours, a day. That doesn’t have to mean calisthenics; it could simply mean allowing children to play, crawl or walk – as long as it gets them moving.

By age five, kids should be spending at least 60 minutes, or an hour, a day in “energetic” play, meaning running, jumping around and active playing. …

CTV – Tots under 4 should move more, sit less: guidelines

We’ve got children younger than 18 months in my gym. What about yours?

    Flip Factory, Calgary

I dropped in on my old friend Darlene Traviss at her new facility, Flip Factory in N.E. Calgary.

    Darlene Traviss

Darlene’s that rarity. An entrepreneur in socialist Canada. (Most gyms are parent governed in Canada.)

Her club is staying away from competitive Artistic gymnastics. But they offer just about everything else.

Preschool makes up about 60% of the membership.

Trampoline, Circus, Demo Team (Gymnaestrada), …

When construction is complete, here’s the goal:

5,600 square feet of gym space which houses: 4 full size trampolines, a 40′ tumble track, a 40′ x 40′ sprung floor exercise space, a large foam pit, indoor toboggan hill for preschoolers, 40′ bouldering wall, beams, low tight ropes, slack lines, bars (including a pit bar), lots of climbing ropes, rings and vaulting apparatus.

    Typical rotations:

    • Mission Impossible obstacle course
    • Reverse Bungee: a giant jolly jumper
    • Gladiators: semi-combative challenges
    • Parkour on a dedicated circuit, complete with tramp wall

    Special Needs kids are welcomed:

    Down’s Syndrome
    Deaf and Hard of Hearing
    Cerebral Palsy
    Fetal Alcohol Syndrome
    Amputees
    ADD and ADHD
    Autism and Asperger’s
    Brain injuries

An additional 2000 square foot mezzanine space houses our Tot Drop-In during the daytime. This area is filled with equipment specially designed for 1 – 5 year olds: Mats of all shapes and sizes, slides, climbing apparatus, ball pits and more. Equipment configuration and pieces change weekly. This gym is well padded and encourages movement and exploration. A seating area for parents built into the space makes it a perfect spot to hang out with friends while letting preschoolers burn off energy! The mezzanine space is cleared and available to other groups in the evenings.

A 750 square foot hardwood dance studio is used for our fitness classes and is also available to other groups.

Two spacious birthday party rooms are available for eats and treats after activities in the gym are finished up.

    CONGRATULATIONS Darlene. I’m completely impressed.
