Team Building … for Coaches
by site editor Rick McCharles
“Team Building” normally refers to athletes.
But in this article I talk about building team spirit with the coaches in your gym.
It evolved out of a Gymnastics Alberta retreat workshop with 40 gym coaches brain-storming these topics:
Coaching as FUN
Coaches as PEOPLE
Coaching COMMUNICATION
Coaching as WORK
A happy gym is an effective and profitable gym.

I would like to add under communication that coaches should feel that their opinions are valued by administrators. If we have any special events, seek out the opinions and ideas of our coaches, since they’ll often be at the events working them. When they can contribute to planning, they’re more likely to take ownership and really make the event work!
Also, if our coaches are out in the lobby talking to parents and getting to know the clientele, then their opinions are invaluable. If we want to start a new program or make a change to the program and the coaches who are out there teaching and communicating with the clientele think those changes will not work in our gyms, listen to them.
