The kids who really love this game are the fast runners with agility to avoid the “sharks”. This elimination-type game (when tagged, you SIT as a shark, so are effectively eliminated) can be modified to be more inclusive; instead of sharks, when tagged, become crabs and crab walk to catch runners. Also, runners can be sea horses and “gallop” across the ocean, or runners can be fish who must be in a “school” of three or more (holding hands or linking arms). Use different locomotions for different types of fish: dog/cat fish– four legged run, minnows — keep feet together and hop/swim across ocean. Older kids can be starfish and cartwheel across (age and maturity appropriate). Use your imagination and give this old game some new life!
