    “open” gymnastics

I love “open gym” time. It’s fascinating to see what kids want to do when they are free in our giant playgrounds.

    BC – Play Gymnastics

Gymnastics BC launched the PLAY Gymnastics brand yesterday at separate events at Club Aviva Gymnastics in Coquitlam and Cartwheels Inc. in Surrey. This new provincial brand highlights the importance of recreational gymnastics as the first activity for all children in British Columbia.

… With close to 41,000 members, gymnastics is the fourth largest participation sport in British Columbia, behind only soccer, hockey and athletics. Of that membership 83% are under the age of 12 …

Also introduced this weekend was Sammy – the new mascot for the brand….

    old gymnasts never die …

Power Stretching and Easy Exercises by Shiro Tanaka

In his late 50s, one of my first gymnastics mentors published his personal training program. He demonstrates all exercises himself in the home or office, using no special equipment.

I asked Shiro he’d ever done Yoga. “Never.”, he replied.

Like most of the old school gymnastics folks, he considers Yoga inferior to traditional gymnastics stretching. Shiro grew up with Tsukahara, one year younger.

Shiro’s book is not available for sale anywhere, unfortunately. It was published by his University for internal use.

But I’m inspired … just as Shiro inspired me as a gymnast and young coach. (In the late 1970s, he insisted we stretch every morning in the shower, to save time.)

    Introducing Glides

Hi Liz here sharing with you one of my favorite simple bars stations! It’s easy enough do be done independently and is fun!

It’s a great way to introduce a glide swing and practice regrasping the bar. The stability ball also teaches young gymnasts to be aware of their core muscles (you see in the video how the ball starts to roll from side to side as her core relaxes). Using a scooter is a nice modification too for younger ages/levels!

Does anyone have any other fun drills for teaching a glide? Please reply to share!

      Great post, Liz. Thanks.

I’m going to dig up a tutorial on Glides by JAO. And I’ll post it as a follow-up.
